I just bought an m-audio oxygen 8 midi controller to use with ableton. I am able to go into preferences -> midi and see it in the list of devices that are connected, but when I play notes they do not register in any VST.

What are the settings to check for when enabling a midi controller to use to control a VST?

I have played a few vst's that have piano patches and they sound okay, but they do not quite fool you into thinking it is the real thing.

Anyone know of one that stands out and sounds just like the real thing?

http://cueloop.com/questions/18/time-stretching-accapellas-in-ableton-8Time stretching accapellas in ableton 8djcode2009-11-12T18:15:44Z2009-11-24T00:44:05Z

Time stretching certain accapellas has always been a pain in the ass. Some seem to stretch easily while others are frustratingly difficult.

Ableton 8 improved their warping quite a bit, but I still seem to have problems getting certain accapellas stretched correctly.

Does anyone have a trick or method in ableton 8 that makes warping accapellas any easier?

http://cueloop.com/questions/12/recording-guitar-with-abletonRecording guitar with abletonTBeck2009-11-04T00:02:05Z2009-11-21T04:29:05Z

I am finally ready to really start producing. One problem is I lack money to buy a good midi controller, Ableton, maybe a good VST pack. etc. etc.

That said, I have a Marshall JCM 900 guitar amp that I could sell on ebay for about $600 and a speaker cab I could sell for probably $300, and a Roland MC-505 I could sell for maybe $200-$300(I have never used the 505, I bought it for my band, another guy was the "beat maker" he has sinced moved to Oklahoma, but I can get it back from him.

I want to for sure play a real guitar on tracks I produce, my only recording experience is with bands, where they mic'd my amp. If I sell my amp I won't have that. Can i record my electric guitar direct into Ableton? Is their software that can make it sound like it came out of my Marshall? Like a Line 6 or something, but not the pedal, just for recording.

I love my Marshall, and they don't even make the 900 anymore, but it no longer gets used, and I'd rather have the money to put towards the music I am making now.

As for the MC-505, is that worth keeping, to get sounds off of etc. or would I be better off selling it and using the money to go towards VST packages?

Thanks

http://cueloop.com/questions/7/what-are-the-main-differences-between-a-compressor-and-a-limiterWhat are the main differences between a compressor and a limiter?loopianzu2009-10-28T23:13:27Z2009-11-04T10:09:24Z

What are the fundamental differences between a compressor and limiter? What are the appropriate uses for each? I am still trying to learn the proper uses of both, but am still not totally clear on what makes them different.

They both seem to boost in volume without creating distortion, but I would love to know more about when it is appropriate to use one or the other.

Thanks!

http://cueloop.com/questions/10/how-do-you-properly-use-a-spectrum-analyzer-in-the-mixing-processHow do you properly use a spectrum analyzer in the mixing processdjcode2009-11-03T00:52:12Z2009-11-03T00:52:12Z

I have heard a few times from random mixing tutorials on the net that a spectrum analyzer can help in the mixing process. Does anyone have any experience with using one for mixing? If so, how do you use it in the mixing process?

Right now I do all of my mixing by ear, but the thought of being able to visualize the different frequencies and layers that I am mixing seems like it could help by allowing me to see when I have overlapping sounds that "muddy" up the mix.

http://cueloop.com/questions/5/how-do-i-create-cool-basslines-for-progressive-music-in-ableton-and-reasonHow do I create cool basslines for progressive music in Ableton and Reason?jchome2009-10-23T17:06:40Z2009-10-27T02:41:58Z

Hi,
I'm using Ableton and Reason 4 for producing.. I tried producing cool basslines.. but everything I'm coming with is working with trance or techno.. not progressive house. :/

Help :)

http://cueloop.com/questions/1/how-do-i-use-sidechain-compression-on-my-bassline-in-ableton-8How do I use sidechain compression on my bassline in ableton 8?loopianzu2009-10-20T00:27:30Z2009-10-23T03:41:54Z

I have been trying to figure out how to add that "pumping" side chain compression that I hear in a lot of dance tracks, but have not quite figured out to get it to sound right.

I am using ableton 8, and I see the sidechain button on the compressor, but that is where I get lost. I map it to a 4/4 drum pattern that I have created, but it just doesn't sound right. I can hear the kick and I am not hearing my bass sound change in any way.

Anyone happen to know how to achieve this? Thanks!
